Thunder Bay - April 14, 2014
Northwestern Ontario’s only French Language organization, offering services in the field of violence against women, is expanding its services thanks to an Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant. The recently renamed Centr’Elles, offers French counselling and peer support, accompaniment, practical assistance, information as well as referral and advocacy for all women and their families.
Currently, Centr’Elles provides services in the district of Thunder Bay and a satellite office in Geraldton serves communities in the Municipality of Greenstone on Hwy 11. With the help of the Trillium Grant, Centr’Elles will be expanding their services west to the Manitoba border, north to Red Lake and east to Manitouwadge.
The Trillium Grant will fund the recruitment and training of volunteers to aid in the expansion. It is crucial for Francophone women to receive services in their first language. This grant not only allows for the expansion of services, it guarantees that the best professional services will be provided to the Francophone community throughout Northwestern Ontario.
- According to the last census, Northwestern Ontario’s Francophone Population is increasing.
- Ontario Trillium Grant is contributing $67,000 to this project.
- Stats show that women are more likely to seek help when services are available in their first language.
